My husband and I are first-time homebuyers. We're shopping around for lenders and one of the contenders went behind our backs and emailed our realtor and the listing agent, stating there were "certain closing costs" the veteran can't pay. So she requested an $8,000 increase in sales price and a $8,000 seller-paid concession. (Note: There hasn't been an inspection or appraisal yet; there's no logical reason for the increase in sales price.)

Did the lender do this so they could charge us more at closing? We know this is not OK, but is it a common practice? Illegal?
