I know that one big "beautiful" bill is closing the double-consolidation loophole soon, and I won't have my second parent plus fully dispersed until January of next year, so that's already not an option. I was reading a bit and saw people saying to do a single consolidation on just one loan. I'm currently in school, and as such, our payments are deferred to graduation (2029)+6 months, so I'm not sure if I should have my borrowing parent consolidate the sole 25-26 loan or just leave it as is. Would the consolidated loan still be eligible for deferrment?

The answer could very well just be to do nothing, just wanted to ask since the changes take effect soon.

Should I consolidate a single Parent Plus loan?

    1. If your parent is going to be taking more loans out on or after July 1, 2026 then it won’t matter either way. The only plan they will have access to for any parent plus loans or consolidations containing parent plus loans is the new Tiered Standard plan. They will have no other repayment plan.

I recently wrote a post about these changes for PPLs and the upcoming deadline. You can find that here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/StudentLoans/s/Vzz2x4R40P](https://www.reddit.com/r/StudentLoans/s/Vzz2x4R40P). I would make sure your parent understands the changes as they take on more debt.
