A few days ago my car was vandalized by someone. Major damage to the windshield ( they completely crashed an object through it that landed inside my car, cracked casing on rearview mirror, and scratched up hood. There is a police report, crime investigation, and plenty of video/picture evidence as well as eyewitness testimony to this. I immediately began filing a claim because I of course was in shock and something happened to my car. I'm sortof second guessing myself now because I'm not sure if the damage is more than my deductible or not. Really hard to say until someone gives me an estimate. Buuuut waiting for the claims process delays repairs just by the nature of it. So I'm stuck without a car that really only needs the windshield repaired to use. My thinking was that I have rental coverage while everything gets fixed and that I may not have to pay for the damages. I also literally just got Progressive like 10 days ago and added good coverage so that I'd be good if something did happen.

Did I make a mistake filing a claim?

    1. When you asked them for a rental, what was their response?

If progressive is a new company for you, they might have to do further investigation. Having a loss this early into a policy is always going to be flagged and further investigated. However, if you filed a police report and/or have other documentation proving the date of loss, you should be fine.

Once you file the claim, it counts as a claim. Even if you’re not at-fault, it can count against you. People who file claims are statistically more likely to file claims in the future.

It’s always a good idea to get an estimate prior to filing a claim to make sure it’s worth it a possible increase.

Granted, if you have a newer vehicle, the windshield alone could be $1000. A lot of the new ones need to be “calibrated”.
