would be insane if it’s a new model, because what stops Indo/malay/sing dot he same for the malacca strait, south africa for cape of good hope and any other chokepoint at this point

I think in the short term it’s to show they have de facto control over the strait, without having to bomb ships. Whether they’ll continue this long term, who knows

$2mil oer veseel is like 2% tax equivalent. I would be happy to let them have it, so long as we continue to get the energy supply undisrupted.

What would prevent the UAE and Oman to do the same with Iranian and Iran destined vessels then?

      It cuts both ways

How is Iran charging his fee? Who is it being paid to and how are they transmitting it? And how would Iran then turn on and off the alleged mines that are the biggest threat?

This is an insane claim that is not being implemented.

Iran wants it to be the new model. I highly doubt there will be much the US can stop it. What are they going to do, spend $3m worth interceptors for a 90% chance at a fee free passage?

In the long run, countries will find ways of transporting oil that avoids the straits altogether.
