Hey Everyone I am an international student in the US and i got a on campus job 6 months back and recently got my SSN too

I bank with chase and its been around 7 months with them

I was considering to get myself a credit card but confused between many options out there

i don't have any credit history and i have to start building now

    i have listed out

Chase freedom unlimited – ik it requires credit score to get one but i saw some post said that they are getting approved for it as their first credit card, can somebody actually confirm that they have got chase freedom unlimited as their first crediit card

Bilt Credit card – I am very confused about it, i pay around 3k $ in rent so i was thinking to take this but i saw many post saying that they have changed their guidelines so it has become a bit too complicated to get rewards from them

the other one is discover Student credit card – ik this is a very nice credit card
but i got to know that we should never surrender your first credit card, and i have got suggestions from people saying that after my college there will be much better cards than discover that we will start using other cards and leave discover

i still have like a year of college left so very confused?

    1. You will likely need to apply for a student card or even a secured credit card. Capital One and Discover both have reasonable options here (Capital One is absorbing Discover so products are likely to be consolidated eventually). Over time, you’ll be able to increase your credit line on this card and convert it into the non-student/secured version.

It’s okay to close your first card eventually but it does help to keep older accounts open as you build credit.

ETA: Chase also offers the Freedom Rise which could be an option considering you’re already a banking customer and provides an automatic upgrade path to the Freedom Unlimited.

With no credit history, your best bet is a secured credit card. Capital One is friendly to applicants without credit history. After several months of on time full payments they will refund your deposit and may increase credit limit.

It is okay to close your first card once you get more cards in the future. Your credit history is more important in order to get good cards and not just finishing college.

Maybe apply in-branch for a Chase Freedom Unlimited for best chance of getting approved
