I applied to one of the Freedom cards. For context, I am a college student working part time and I have about 7 months of personal credit history and recently got another card before Chase. My FICO is over 700 from being an authorized user. I have no bank accounts with Chase.
I applied online and instantly got rejected, so I called recon and was told that I was rejected for insufficient history and no balance in Chase accounts. I asked for reconsideration so they transferred me to another person who verified my income again.
After that I called the recon line again and connected with agents who said there was no information on my application. After 2 days of no updates available, I called recon and the automated system did something different and transferred me to the fraud department so I had to confirm I did intend to apply. After clearing that up, I called the recon line again and the agent there told me it was reviewed again and I was denied. He said there was nothing that I could do as it was already under recon once and gave me no specific reason as to why I was denied.
Well, I decided the next day to call in. I explained my situation of being denied after reconsideration and asked if anything could be done for one last look because I’ve wanted to start a relationship with Chase. The lady was super nice, put me on hold for a few minutes, and then came back and told me she was able to get it relooked at and it was approved!
Considering I had been denied from recon once, I consider myself super lucky! My advice if you want to apply to a Chase card with less than a year history is to call recon if you are denied, be super nice and explain your situation, and hope it all works out in the end! While I didn’t open a bank account, I’m sure that would be super helpful as well.
Chase freedom approval after recon denied me (less than 1 year history, no bank accounts)
