Hey everyone, I’m dealing with a frustrating insurance situation and could really use some advice from underwriters, agents, or anyone who has successfully navigated a LexisNexis dispute.

The Situation: Back in March 2022, my roommate and I lived together. Because we shared an address, he was listed as a driver on my auto insurance policy (Progressive). During that time, he got into an accident.

    • The car: A 2010 Nissan Altima, registered entirely in his name. I did not own it.
    • The driver: He was the sole operator. I wasn't in the vehicle.
    • The incident: It resulted in a property damage claim.

The Problem: Fast forward to today: we no longer live together, he has his own life, and he is completely off my policy. However, my insurance premiums are currently skyrocketing.

I just pulled my LexisNexis C.L.U.E. report, and that 2022 claim is sitting directly on my file. Because I was the primary policyholder at the time, the claim attached itself to my profile, even though it was his car and his accident.

    My Questions:

    1. LexisNexis Dispute: What is the most effective way to dispute this with LexisNexis? I want this claim unlinked from my personal profile since I didn't own the car and wasn't involved. Is there specific language I should use?
    2. Letter of Experience: Should I ask Progressive for a "Letter of Experience" stating I wasn't the driver/owner? Will providing this to my current carrier's underwriting department actually get them to drop the surcharge?
    3. General Advice: Has anyone successfully gotten an underwriter to manually exclude a former roommate's claim from their premium calculations?

I feel like I'm being financially penalized for a mistake I didn't make, by someone who doesn't even live with me anymore. Any guidance on the exact steps, documents, or magic words I need would be hugely appreciated!

TL;DR: Roommate crashed his own car in 2022. Because he was a listed driver on my policy, the claim is stuck on my LexisNexis report and spiking my current rates. We no longer live together. How do I prove it wasn't me and get this removed?

Former roommate crashed his own car, but we shared an auto policy. Now my LexisNexis/Insurance report is tanking my rates. How do I clear this?

    1. Get the letter of experience from Progressive and present it to your current provider.

What state are you in? Depending on the state/carrier; the claim on your CLUE report may have no impact on your rate. I know plenty of personal auto insurers who only look back 3 years for at-fault accidents and moving violations (longer for DUIs or reckless driving).

You have to realize that an increase in premium of 50% from 2020 to today is incredibly common, and isn’t close to the worst we’ve seen on this sub.
