whats the best way to live rent free or close to it?

i was thinking of getting a camper or a tent and im not really sure whats the best route. recently i realized that i wouldnt really be able to meal prep and keep my food in a freezer in either condition. i think getting section 8/HUD housing might actually be the most frugal way to live. i just cant get the annoyance of paying a landlord out of my head. i dont want to pay a landlord or help a bank get richer.
