I tried to remove the rust using paracetamol method, however since it become a bigger mess, I switched to toothpaste and salt method, which worked partially, after then I tried to on the switch for iron, then my house got blackout. I'm scared of turning this back on. After some hours, the plate become like this. Does someone know what is the blue grey thing is? Should I try to turn this on?

    1. A replacement at the thrift store should be pretty affordable.

      Sounds like you’ve already spent enough time and risk on this project. I dont think trying to make the iron work is worth the effort anymore

    2. BobcatSome3265 on

      Salt is an electrolyte, meaning it conducts electricity. You probably shorted some of the electronics and it heated up unchecked, tripping a breaker and burning the face of it

      Have you tried to sand the surface?

      1. Place metal specific sandpaper, grit up, on a flat surface (you will move the iron, not the sandpaper). Glass is best but a counter top would work. (will be messy)
      2. Gently sand your iron, drawing small circles without much putting much pressure
      1. Grits 320 -> 400 -> 600 will probably do the trick
      3. Clean well, it will stain your clothes otherwise

      Edit: Just read you had electrical problems… throw that away or find someone who fixes small electronics
