Working with a freelancer in Italy, I’m in US. They are looking to use Wise to transfer the payment. The business seems like a legit small freelancer. No real reason to doubt their legitimacy.

For my safety I asked about an option to pay smaller amounts for the service rather than all at once, that way if something was off and they ghost, I’m not losing any substantial money. I’m talking about maybe $50 at a time. They had no issue with that and even offered to take payment at the end, if I was concerned about my safety.

I just don’t know anything about wise, is it safe to use? I thought about using my credit card with wise rather then tying it to a bank account for extra protection but I also feel like that’s going overboard. If I use wise to transfer from my bank account vs credit card am I at any risk?

    Wise (formally Transferwise), safe?

    1. Wise is a well established company for transferring money internationally. You need to be concerned about whether the company you are transferring the money to is legitimate, but I wouldn’t worry about Wise as a platform.

    2. Been using Wise for business purposes and it has been flawless. Have money incoming from all over the world and paying people globally. Been using them for a good 10+ years I think.

Yes, Wise is a reputable company and I’ve used them quite a few times. They are a good option for international transfers because they have quite low fees. Still a good idea to be careful of course.

I’ve been using Wise for six years for international bank transfers and never had an issue. I trust them more than my bank.

    5. I’ve received international inheritances using it, so in my experience, yes. Not life changing amounts of money but certainly meaningful amounts.
