I'm aware of one card, the Amex Blue Cash Preferred, where you hold the card for a year until the annual fee charges to your account after 1 year with $0 annual fee. Then once the annual fee is charged to your account you downgrade to the Blue Cash everyday and the annual fee is refunded. Sometime later you get an invitation in the app to upgrade to the Blue Cash Preferred with a $0 annual fee for a year. Rinse and repeat for a $0 annual fee every year.

Are there other cards that this works with?

Annual fee cards that can be downgraded then upgraded to bypass annual fee

Most AF cards will refund after a downgrade or cancellation after 30 days of fees being charged. Whether there’s a free upgrade offer, is anyone’s guess.
