It’s a global commodity but America’s supplies aren’t threatened to the extent of countries in Asia. Trouble in Japan and Korea can trouble US financial markets though.

25% of refined oil in the US comes from Canada and 80% of Canada’s refined oil comes from the US. Canada makes up 60% of crude oil exports to the US. It gets refined and then Canada buys it back. I’ve always wondered which side is getting the better deal?

What will those bar charts look like after Alberta joins the USA?

Makes sense. The general public never has to think of Canadian oil supplies because Canada is a safe and stable neighbor.

The perception/reality gap is so much worse if you don’t limit the question to foreign oil.

This graph is messed up. What exactly is the y axis here?
I’m guessing:
“% of americans who think each nation is the primary source of imports” on the left, vs
“% of imports from each source” on the right.
These are two different things.

The data here is true, but weirdly cuts out the other Middle East importers that would be important given the context of Iran.
In reality, a lot of that Canadian crude is not used or sold in the U.S., but is refined and exported again. Also while Saudi oil only makes up 4-5% on the year, Gulf Countries outside of OPEC make an additional 10% of the U.S. imports, and OPEC (which includes Saudi Arabia and Iraq) makes 13-15%.
So overall, the Iran war is threatening 15-20% of U.S. imports, not the 4.3% you might think if you assumed Saudi Arabia was the main/only middle eastern oil exporter to the U.S.
Both reasons Trump is an absolute moron for threatening Canada and invading Iran.

I speak for the people of Canada. We will now be keeping our oil and refining it in-house. That will be all.

And with so much oil you’d think Canada would be wealthy and have like $0.50/L gas but nope….. like fools we just give it all away and are totally dependent on others LOL.

Hold on Trump says he does not need to deal with Canada.
