I am currently an Applied Mathematics and Statistics major at Stony Brook University. I am deciding between double majoring with Economics or getting a Finance minor. My main goal is to become an actuary which is totally doable with just the AMS major. The point of the double major or minor is for support if the actuarial pathway does not work out for me.

I added the Finance minor since it was something small that opened up the exact class I need for VEE credits which are courses necessary for Associateship down the path (class is ACC 210 – Financial Accounting). It also opens other classes that are pretty valuable like BUS 355 – Investment Analysis, BUS 365 – Financial Management, and especially BUS 367 – Python for Finance. With this I was still going to get ECO 110 and then ECO 303 – Intermediate Micro for those VEE credits as well. I am already taking BUS 330, for VEE credits as well, which is a requirement for Finance Minor so I thought it was smart to just get the small Finance Minor to get access to ACC 210.

I've also thought about the benefits of an Economics Double Major. It is often recommended to us here at SBU, but I don't know it's worth. I personally am not the biggest fan of economics (I took AP Macro in Highschool and even though I did good on the AP test and in class it was incredibly hard and I genuinely lucked out on getting the 5 on the AP test) Going for the double major will add a lot of coursework that I don't especially like to my schedule, but I guess it might be worth it since they go hand in hand. Having this major also allows me to still take ACC 210 and now ECO 303 has a purpose.

The way it's working out is that I am able to graduate in 5 total semesters with the Finance Minor. Replacing with the Economics major can technically keep it to 5 as well, but scheduling will likely not work out and each semester will be very heavy.

A super crazy plan but ever so slight chance is to have both the ECO double major with the Finance minor and just give up on the 5 semester plan and then graduate in 6-7.

What do y'all think? If you need any more info let me know.
