
A paper published last month documented what data center engineers had been quietly observing for years: the thermal output of large-scale AI training clusters, combined with high ambient humidity, is producing an oil-like hydrocarbon condensate on GPU heatsinks. The compound was analyzed. It comes back consistent with light petroleum fractions.
The researchers shelved the harvesting question immediately. At the time, electricity was too expensive relative to oil prices for collection at scale to make any economic sense.
Then the Strait of Hormuz closed. Brent went to $126. The IEA called it the largest oil supply disruption in history.
The same team has now run the numbers at current prices. US data centers alone consume 176 terawatt-hours of electricity per year and generate heat continuously, 24 hours a day. At $126 a barrel — with Iran threatening $200 — the cost-per-barrel of harvested condensate crosses into viable territory for the first time.
The paper does not claim this solves the crisis. It does not rule it out either.
