Curious what people here think about using GI Bill benefits for shorter, skills-based programs instead of a traditional degree.

I came across a culinary training program in the DC/Arlington area that’s now approved for GI Bill (Ch. 31 & 33). It’s about 14–21 weeks, and from what I can tell, benefits can cover tuition + housing depending on eligibility.

    On paper, it seems like:

    • Faster path to income vs 2–4 year degree
    • Lower opportunity cost (less time out of workforce)
    • More direct job alignment

    But obviously tradeoffs:

    • Less flexibility than a degree
    • Industry-specific (hospitality)
    • Long-term earning ceiling may differ

For anyone who’s used their GI Bill this way (short programs, certs, trades, etc.), did it pay off?

Trying to think about this more from a financial/ROI perspective than just “what sounds interesting.”

Using GI Bill for short-term training instead of college — worth it?
