I recently bought a house and after closing costs + moving expenses, my budget is basically gone.

The place didn’t have any mini split, and the interior felt really outdated. I wanted to at least make the two main bedrooms comfortable in summer.

Instead of paying for professional HVAC installation, I spent about 2 weeks researching DIY guide of Costway, and with a friend’s help, I managed to get it done.

Total savings came out to around $1000 compared to quotes I got.

Now I’m trying to be as intentional as possible with that saved money.

The house still needs a lot:

    • rugs

    • curtains

    • some basic furniture upgrades

I don’t want to just buy cheap stuff that I’ll replace in a year, trying to stay frugal but also make it feel like a home.

Where do you usually find good, affordable home decor or soft furnishings?

Open to anything: secondhand, online, DIY, etc.

DIY AC install saved me $1000,how should I spend it on home decor?

    1. When it comes to furniture of good quality that will last, thrifting is the way to go. It may be a cliché, but they really aren’t making them like they used to.

And since you are handy, don’t be afraid to choose pieces that might need some restoration. Just do some research about what you’ve got so you don’t ruin anything valuable by painting it.

    2. I’m not saying this to be rude or mean but this is exactly the mind set that keeps people poor. Just because you saved money doesn’t mean you should spend it. You managed to save $1000 on the project, perfect. Now put it aside.

Maybe this doesn’t pertain to your financial situation and you have the money but this is general advice to a lot of people in this sub.
