I'm sure this has already been mentioned, but if you have life insurance through your employer, you may want to get an individual life insurance policy. Just came across a situation where a long time employee was laid off and lost company life insurance (not convertable). Unfortunately, there is a pre-existing condition that would prohibit getting a policy at a reasonable cost or more likely just being outright rejected. They are not even close to being self-insured. And this person's health is declining. I didn't follow this advice and I feel lucky that I was self-insured before leaving the company. I think it would have been convertible but wouldn't have been the best deal.
If you have life insurance through your employer, you may want to get other life insurance as well.
