    Best card if traveling American Airlines

    I’d love some help in deciding which card to go for.

    Mostly trying to use the card for miles. Based on where I’ll be living I’ll be flying mostly American Airlines. Family of 4 domestic vacations at least once a year and international flights with my partner once a year.

    From what I’ve seen the citi cards seem to be good daily drivers since the points transfer over well. Other than the AAdvantage cards, which other ones should I be looking into? It’s my first card I’m considering which will have an annual fee so trying to make an informed decision.

    Current cards:

    ⁠•  ⁠couple of standard visas without AF

    • ⁠FICO Score: 790

    • ⁠Oldest account age: 8 years

    • ⁠Income: $150,000. Anticipating ~$400,000 in a year once medical training is done

    • ⁠Average monthly spend and categories:

    ⁠•  ⁠dining $500

⁠•  ⁠groceries: $1000

⁠•  ⁠gas: $100

    • ⁠Open to Business Cards: e.g. No

    • ⁠What's the purpose of your next card? Travel

    • ⁠Are you OK with category spending or do you want a general spending card? Ok with category spending.

      I think, naturally, Citi Strata Premier could be a good fit for you. It’ll cover 3x on all of the categories you mentioned and you can transfer points to AA.

      Citi Strata Premier hands down. You can churn AA cards too for more points but youll earn a lot of Citi TYP that transfer 1:1 to AA holding that card.

      Citi Strata Premier. 1:1 American Airlines transfers, unlimited 3x groceries dining gas & travel (airlines & hotels)

      You should get the Citi AA cards for the SUB’s and then get a Citi Strata Premier for the SUB as well as the multipliers. You’ll get 3x on dining, groceries, and gas and all of those points can be transferred to AA.

      I don’t think AA points are necessarily a better value to book American flights vs. paying cash.

      It used to be the case that airline points were always a better deal, but now I think cash back is sometimes/often a better deal.

      Plus that way you can book any airline and the cards have low/no annual fees.
