Hey everyone,
I’m looking to open a new credit card and could use some advice. My credit score is around 744, and I already have a Chase Freedom, but I want something more simple for everyday spending.
Right now I’m mainly considering:
- Amex (Blue Cash Everyday)
- Wells Fargo (Active Cash)
- Capital One (Savor)
My goal is just a good, reliable everyday card with solid cashback and no headache.
From what I’ve seen, a lot of people say a 2% flat card like Wells Fargo Active Cash is best as a catch-all , but I also see others recommending cards like Savor or Amex for better category rewards.
Also curious about:
- Ease of use / simplicity
- Customer service (heard Amex is really strong here)
- Which one pairs best with Chase Freedom
Would really appreciate any recommendations or personal experiences
Thanks!
Thinking between Amex, Wells Fargo, and Capital One for a simple everyday card (744 score)

Depends what you mean pairs well with.. the Chase Freedom Flex pairs the best..
Do you want just cashback or looking at miles too?
Do you spend more online or with dining? If online, Blue Cash Everyday.. if Dining, Savor.. both capture groceries very well..
I like Savor and Venture/Venture X..
Choose between the Wells Fargo Active Cash, Citi Double Cash, or Fidelity Rewards. They each earn unlimited 2% cash back on all purchases with no annual fee.

I think category specific rewards make the most sense *after* you’ve secured a good catch-all credit card, and as a complement to said card. But otherwise I find that people tend to underestimate how much of a difference better returns on *all* their spending makes each year compared to just a few categories, especially accounting for things like taxes, medical bills, insurance, motor vehicle services, etc. It also helps people make smarter decisions about what their next card should be by saving them from giving too much weight to 2% multipliers (like those on the Chase Prime, USB Altitude Connect and Go, BofA CCR, etc.)
If you’re just going with one card, a flat 2% card makes the most sense.
The main issue with Amex is they aren’t always accepted unlike Visa and Mastercard. It usually fine, but just something to know.
I think online Amex hype is maybe partially advertising and somewhat unearned.
If you can use the Disney+ credits maybe go for an Amex Blue Cash Preferred. Otherwise it’s fine to get the Blue Cash Everyday. Neither of these are going to save more than a few dollars a month (less than $10) though vs. a 2% card in my opinion.
You can look for yourself at how much cash back you’ll get, but I think in general it doesn’t add up to much.
That all said, I’d maybe suggest adding a
– 2% card for everyday purchases
And then if you still want more credit cards maybe look at a
– Amazon Visa (3% off Amazon or 5% if you buy their Prime service)
– Citi Custom Cash for 5% off groceries
