Would making all violent criminals in the United States into working slaves have economic benefit to the economy?

This comes from a place of curiosity as I saw statistic that said we spend roughly $60 billion on the United States prison system. Our prison in the United States also is horrible as we have a very high reoffending rate. The idea I had(purely theoretical) was that if we returned all murderers, violent reoffending sex offenders and the scum of the Earth into some type of slavery, where they just work somewhere and produce some output. The money saved from this and produced could be used to improve current prisons and rehabilitation centers and education. Please don’t chastise me for this as I’m simply more curious than anything and I’m aware of the moral issue would be kind of tricky too.
