I recently went to clean my microwave and lots of the pant from the inside flaked off and revealed rusty spots everywhere.

I have always kept the habit of leaving the door open after I’m done using so it can dry so was confused how this happened.

I asked my roommate about this and he apparently ‘didn’t know that was a thing’. So that explains the rust.

Our old microwave (which came with the house) was from the 80s and had a hole rusted all the way though and was quite dangerous so I replaced it about 3 years ago.

I can’t accept that a microwave would need replacing after 3 years. I’d expect to get at least 10 years out of it!

How can I reseal the inside? Is there a special kind of paint I could use?

    Has anyone tried this before?

Rusty spots in microwave- is there any way to reseal the inside?

    1. do not put a seal into your microwave. this is VERY CRUEL to the animal, and violates a lot of wildlife laws and regulations.

Funny, I just painted the inside of my rusted microwave last night. I used a can of microwave cavity paint for microwaves that I got at Home Depot for about $8.

My advice: scrape as much of the rust off as you can, then judge whether the metal is thick enough to paint. (Mine was mostly rusted at the bottom, below where the glass tray goes.) If so, clean and sand it well, seal off the air vents with tape. then hit it with the paint, one thin coat at a time.

In the future you may want to put some dessicant packets inside when it’s not in use. Or figure out what is making it rust so much so fast. (The humidity maybe?) I’ve had my microwave for 14 years and it was only a little rusted.
