Before I made the switch last autumn to making homemade food for my dog, the very said he was overweight, he was always sleepy, he'd pick at his very expensive kibble, and his food cost per month ~$60. (It was 75-80$ for 6 weeks)
Then I started looking into the Farmer's dog and that's actually still pretty expensive. So, I asked our vet and three other local vets what human foods were safe and actually healthy for dogs. I created a recipe, bought ingredients and tweaked it over the first couple of batches. My dog loves his food so much now that he will excitedly watch when I'm filling his bowl, or dance around when I'm cooking it. He's lost enough weight to be healthy and is back to playing and wrestling, even though he's now 14 human years old!
Please consult your vet with any changes you plan to try, as well as portion sizes. My recipe makes enough for 5-6 nights, and it kept in airtight containers in the fridge.
I buy enough at once to freeze ingredients and have enough for the whole month. Depending on any sales, his food FOR THE MONTH is $30-45. And it's only that high, because two of the ingredients I can't get fresh regularly and have to buy frozen or canned.
The recipe: 1.5 lbs boneless skinless chicken meat.
1 lb each frozen butternut squash, sweet potatoes and carrots. 1/2 a bag of fresh spinach. (every frozen bag I've found had salt added). Add these to a pan on the stove with about 1 cup of water. Boil until carrots and chicken are both fully cooked. When fully cooked, drain and then add a large (29 oz) can of pumpkin puree. (only pumpkin). mix well, shredding meat as needed. cool and divide into portions in airtight containers.
For those who have a dog, how much do you spend in a month on their food?

You’re actually likely making your dog incredibly sick. This is not a fully formulated or balanced diet. You cannot make your own food as you are not a board certified veterinary nutritionist and not qualified to formulate a diet. You need to pay one to formulate one for you, which is expensive, and then keeping up with it will also be expensive.
Stick to something WSAVA compliant and call it a day.
