I am a 23 year old male. I will be starting a new job. I am looking to apply for a new credit card.

This year I am expecting to book 3-4 flights between New York & LA. One long haul return international flight. I also need to spend money on renting a car for few days

My credit score is 745. I do not have debt.

I currently have 2 credits cards

    1. Discover Cash Back credit card (I do not use this at all)

    2. BofA Customized Cash Reward credit card (I use this for EVERYTHING)

Generally I use my credit card to order food online, cab, shopping clothes, groceries, mobile bill, some entertainment like movie, eating at restaurants.

Which credit cards should I get? It is okay if I have to apply for multiple credit cards.

I have considered AMEX Gold and Chase Sapphire Preferred

Need tips on big boy credit card

With your travel plans and spending habits, the Chase Sapphire Preferred is definitely solid choice. The travel portal can save you decent money on those NY-LA flights and the rental car coverage is pretty good too.

AMEX Gold might be bit overkill since you already got the BofA for everyday stuff, but if you eat out a lot the 4x on dining could work. Just remember AMEX isn’t accepted everywhere so keep that BofA card active for backup.

Multiple cards is fine, you’re under 5/24 so it’s definitely worth looking into Chase cards, Amex gold is also good to book flights. 3x points on flights booked with the gold, 2x with the sapphire preferred, I personally got more value with the Sapphire’s SUB, since I used it for Hyatt

I would suggest looking whether Sapphire Reserve would work if you’re able to absorb the AF, manage the SUB min spend, and use the credits. The CSP just based on general card benefits might normally be the better/recommended card to start with but the 125K SUB for CSR is really high while the SUB for CSP is meh (the 80K SUB seems to pop up at least once a year and was 100K for a while last year). That 125K gives a lot of wiggle room to try out the card for a year. Chase’s current app language should leave you eligible for new app CSP later, whereas/unlike with Amex downward card acquisition generally won’t qualify for SUB (if you start with Plat and app Gold/Green later), tho there are contrary outlier DPs.
