U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday reacted to the Russian shelling and capture of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant saying that it “risked a catastrophe, a nuclear incident. The Kremlin should immediately cease all attacks around Ukrainian nuclear facilities and allow civilian personnel to do their work,” he said.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the Russian military’s attack on the power plant was the “height of irresponsibility” and that they “applaud the ability of the Ukrainian operators to keep the six reactors in safe conditions while under attack.”

When asked about banning Russian oil imports, Psaki said economic sanctions against Russia are working, but they want to “maintain…a steady flow of global energy with whatever actions we take.” She added, “the reason why the price of gas is going up is not because of steps the president has taken – they’re because president Putin is invading Ukraine and that is creating a great deal of instability.”

When asked about comments by Sen. Lindsey Graham suggesting that Russian President Vladimir Putin should be assassinated, Psaki said “that is not the position of the United States government.”
