I called in to check on my portal travel credit that hadn't posted (booked fully refundable travel just to offset the fee). Talked to the rep about absence of transfer partners and yet the same fee. She offered me 5000 points no strings attached. It's already posted in my statement, and will be added at statement close to my balance. So effective annual fee becomes 25 bucks at which point I am okay letting it be for one more year and not have regret later by converting to connect right now.
