So I had a cousin who I think owns a roofing company or so that’s what I think from what I understand. Anyways, he put an insurance claim in for us and the insurance provided a check to repair the roof, carport, and some of the siding on the house. Insurance gave us a check of 12800 for the Actual Cash Value but the replacement cost value would be around 16k. Anyways, we got a quote from an independent contractor and they quoted us 6k for the roof alone. Then my cousin came, and he quoted us 11k to replace the roof. For the roof, the insurance estimated a ACV of $8637 and a RCV of $11500. Now I don’t know what to do because we feel like he’s trying to take advantage of us and it’s making this a really complicated situation. I would like to hear someone’s input who deals with these type of jobs frequently.
Also, I’d like to add this. My goal isn’t to scam the insurance or pocket the money. I just want to make sure I’m not getting ripped off. If we use the full quantity provided by the insurance, I expect top of the line quality materials which include shingles. He didn’t even sit down with us to talk numbers or the materials that will be used.
Side note: when we heard his quote of 11k we were kind of amazed and didn’t really want to go with him. He then said if we could just write him a check for $2500 and go with the other contractor who quoted us significantly cheaper. This raised red flags for me.
