This wasn’t about spending money directly, but it easily could’ve turned into one of those situations where you end up paying just to avoid the hassle. I got locked out of my Equifax account and couldn’t get back in online. After a few failed attempts, it kept pushing me to call support. I wasn’t too excited about that, but I figured I’d get it over with quickly. The first call didn’t go anywhere. I got hit with those detailed security questions about past loans and accounts, and if you don’t answer exactly right, you’re basically stuck. After failing that round, I seriously considered just leaving it alone and using a paid credit monitoring service instead, just to avoid dealing with it again. But that didn’t sit right with me. There was no reason to spend money on something I should be able to access for free. So I gave it another shot, this time a bit more prepared. I gathered any details I might need and used a simple tool (19Pine) to help keep track of everything during the call so I wouldn’t mess up or miss anything. The second attempt went much smoother. I got through the verification, spoke to a real person, and completed a quick passcode check. Account unlocked. It wasn’t a huge financial win on the surface, but it saved me from potentially paying for something I didn’t need. Just a reminder that sometimes the “easier” option ends up costing you, and it’s worth pushing through a bit of inconvenience to avoid that.

Almost gave up on accessing my credit report, and I'm glad I didn’t
