Earlier this month, I submitted an application to switch from SAVE to IBR. I mailed it to MOHELA and used my 2024 tax return. I haven’t received any official communications from MOHELA or FSA, but I know from USPS that my application package was delivered.

The MOHELA website shows that my forbearance ends tomorrow, 4/22, and I have a payment of $198.73 due 5/22. This is the SAVE amount; I expect my IBR payment to be much higher, likely in the $470-570 range. (Does that sound correct for my stats? AGI $167,674, married filing jointly; loan balance $50,587; family of 4.) My plan is still listed as SAVE. Should I actually pay this amount by 5/22 even though it is a SAVE payment and that plan is on its way out?

I have 8-10 payments left for IDR forgiveness, depending on which count is used, and ideally I would like the tax bomb to hit in 2027 instead of 2026. An application processing lag of a few months would not be a bad thing.

Additional background in case it helps— I’m a former FFEL borrower who began taking loans in the 1990s. I have loans from two public schools, undergrad and law school. I believe my federal loans were originally $85,000 or something in that ballpark. I also had a private loan of about $10,000 that I refinanced and paid off my first few years out of school. My husband no longer carries student loans (mostly paid off, but partly forgiven). I currently have about $50,587 left on my federal loans, 1.875% rate (consolidated at good times).

Any insights appreciated! I did search before posting but didn’t see a scenario that lined up. Thank you!

Application to switch to IBR restarted SAVE payments?
