Hello all, this is going to be long so i apologize in advance.
I need help. I am about 100k in student debt with salie mae. here’s my story: i almost didn’t graduate high school, worked my ass off at community first college for a year, and then got into boston university my sophomore year. when i got in we weren’t told about the CSS profile so we didn’t receive any real aid. after working so hard i told myself i needed to go no matter what (mistake). my father told me before i left that my grandfather, his dad, would help us pay for it.
Flash forward to today, I did not go back to BU because they again offered me no aid when my father is unemployed and my mother makes about 30k a year. My father used to make about 6 figures, but has been out of work since 2023. While on the phone with my grandfather, I brought up how we were going to plan to pay for this debt, and he told me he never said he would pay.
now i am in about 100k in debt, and i dont know what to do. the payemnts are going up ever month but are deferred until 2027. i have a good job now that makes me about 70k a year maybe more (i sell cars) so it really depends. I can start paying that interest down, but not much else at the moment.
I need help figuring out what to do if I try to go back to school. I am taking community college classes now because I think a degree is important, but I'm afraid of what will happen if I do and how even to manage this.
Help me understand what to do.
