Travel insurance: should I buy or take my group insurance through work

I'm going on a 3 month vacation this summer in Europe and need travel insurance.

My company is willing to have me pay out of pocket for company group insurance but asked me to look into buying insurance externally.

Is there a real benefit to one or the other?

I think they want to technically terminate my employment (for the 3 month period) instead of putting me on leave so I think thats the only reason they are asking me to get external travel insurance.
