Hey reddit! Would appreciate some help picking out my next card. I didn't know what I was doing for a long time as I didn't grow up with financially savvy parents, and am just starting to learn about personal finance in the past 2 years. I graduated from grad school about a few years ago, so I've been working and have been high-interest debt free for over two years now with solid savings built up. I'm in a phase of my life where I'd like to start prioritizing traveling and dining out as I find those two things fun and tracking mine and my partner's spending has shown me that we spend a good amount in those areas.
- Current cards: (list cards, limits, opening date)
- My cards: Citi Double Cash ($9400 limit, opened in 2015); Bank of America Custom Cash Rewards ($19,300 limit, opened in 2019); Capital One Venture ($24,500 limit, authorized user on wife's account as of 2024); Capital One Quicksilver ($30,000 limit, authorized user on wife's account as of 2025)
- Partner's cards: Apple Card (unsure of limits/opening date), the same Capital one Venture and Quicksilver from my card
- FICO Score: FICO 8 is 827 (from my Citi cash dashboard); 818 from my CreditWise/Capital One dashboard
- Oldest account age: The one from 2015 so about 11 years
- Chase 5/24 status: 1/24 if authorized user counts
- Income: I make $80k, partner makes $125k
- Average monthly spend and categories (for both of us; based on past 4 months):
- rent: 3000
- dining: 1000
- groceries: 900
- gas: 80
- travel: 980
- Open to Business Cards: No
- What's the purpose of your next card? Would like a travel or dining rewards focused card as we travel and go out to eat fairly frequently. I will say, our travel is not always air travel; we love a good road trip so we air travel maybe 2-3x per year but we are generally traveling once every other month or so at least for a weekend. When we stay at hotels, we prefer nicer, more luxury or boutique hotels when possible over chain hotels, so the more flexible the rewards, the better. We are based out of Boston, so Logan is our primary airport if that helps. Lounge access isn't a huge priority for us.
- Do you have any cards you've been looking at? Chase Sapphire Preferred or Reserve, AmEx Gold or Platinum, but open to any and all ideas as I am fairly new to this world.
- Are you OK with category spending or do you want a general spending card? Category or general are both fine.
Thank you all so much. Reddit has changed the game for my finances, and I deeply appreciate this well of knowledge.
