This took me an embarassingly long time to start doing consistently but I'm genuinley surprised by how much it adds up. Most supermarkets mark down meat that's approaching its sell by date, usually in the morning or late evening depending on the store, and the discounts are often 30 to 50 percent off. I started going in specifically at those times a few months ago just to see what was available and building meals around whatever I found rather than planning first and then shopping. The key thing I figured out is that you have to freeze it the same day you buy it, not think "I'll use this tomorrow" because that's how it goes bad and the whole point is lost. I just come home, portion it if it's a larger pack, wrap it properly, label it with the date and what it is, and it goes straight in the freezer. I've built up a decent rotation now where I almost never pay full price for chicken, mince, or pork because there's always something coming out of the freezer that I bought at a reduction weeks ago. Last month I tracked it properly for the first time and I saved around 22 percent on meat compared to the same rough meal plan the month before. The only actualy tricky part is remembering to take things out to defrost the night before, which I still ocasionaly forget and then have to pivot to eggs or pasta for dinner, which honestly isn't the worst outcome.

I started buying marked down meat and freezing it immediately and it's cut my grocery bill by more than I expected without changing what I actually eat
