In 2008, the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa jointly developed the African Mining Vision. The vision aims to empower women by integrating gender equity in mining polices, laws, regulations, standards and codes.

Georgette Barnes Sakyi-Addo, Ghanaian-born entrepreneur and founder of Georgette Barnes Limited, created her company which specializes in the supply of exploration, drilling and mining equipment. She also serves as the current president of the Association of Women in Mining Africa, AWIMA, which was created to promote an inclusive network for women in the mining sector. She spoke to VOA’s Ndimyake Mwakalyelye about how she is helping to empower women in the African extractive industry.
