I’m currently evaluating my wallet and I’m torn between two philosophies.
On one hand, I like the idea of a simple 1 or 2 card setup (the "set it and forget it" approach). On the other hand, it feels like I'm leaving money on the table by not having a dedicated 5% card for groceries, a different one for travel, and another for "catch-all" spending.
I’d love to hear from both sides:
- Minimalists: Why do you stick to just 1-2 cards? Is it just for simplicity, or do you find that "all-rounder" cards actually yield better long-term value when you factor in time/management?
- Maximizers: At what point does it become diminishing returns? If you have 5, 10, or 15+ cards, how do you manage the logistics (APPs, bill dates, fraud monitoring)?
Does having a "thick" credit file with many accounts actually help your score more than a lean, aged file with just two cards?
Looking forward to your thoughts!
How many active cards is "too many" for you?
