Hit by car owner with non-owner policy

I was hit by a car owner with a non-owner policy. She crossed over the center line and could have hit me head on, I scooted over to the right and she clipped my back, spinning her 180 degrees.

The investigating officer asked me not to obtain info from the woman who hit me and get it from his report. Then he gave me the wrong name of her insurance company.

We have comprehensive but not collision on the car I was driving as it’s worth about $3500. We had uninsured motorists so we thought that was a smart decision, but I am here to tell you it is not.

Because we didn’t have collision, the GEICO rep(my insurer) could not tell me the nearest GEICO repair shop; her system wouldn’t show her.

Because we didn’t have collision, the GEICO shop I know 30 miles away wouldn’t arrange a rental service.

Because I was able to move my car out of the roadway, Police had me call my own tow service. it was going to take 1.5 hrs and then upped it to 2.5 hrs. Finally I drove my car home with its damaged suspension and no bumper.

The next day I called Aspire, the non-owner car insurance company. They explained that they would not be involved in resolution because the policy owner was driving her own car and sent that letter absolving themselves.

So the only good news is now I go thru GEICO and its treated as uninsured motorist. since the car is worth about the limit of uninsured motorist maximum, I’ll get about what it’s worth since I don’t have storage or other charges pending.

Moral of the story is carry collision coverage. Only buy a car you can afford collision coverage on, else no one will help you, not the police, not your insurance company, not the body shop, and definitely not the person who hit you.

Insurance is for assisting you at the worst of times. The system isn’t working well right now.
