Hi Everyone! I have been on SAVE since COVID and this past week I got my 'You Have 90 Days to Select a New Repayment Plan'. TBH I am not sure how to choose a new plan and would love some help figuring out how to move forward.
I have ~$48k in federal loans (mix of un/subsidized) with ~$14k @ 6.6% and the rest with lower interest. The Federal Student Aid Repayment Calculator showed my estimated payments on other plans would be:
- RAP: $151/mo
- IBR: $177/mo
- PAYE: $177/mo
I currently have an income of ~$36k after taxes (long term disability payments that will end in December), am applying to jobs but obviously no idea how long that will take. I have savings about equal to my loans but paying I know them all off right now is not a good idea as that would leave me with nothing and extremely vulnerable to any unforeseen / emergency expenses. I've been riding the $0/mo payments since COVID forbearance. I am currently setting up a HYSA to shift some of my savings into so they don't depreciate with inflation anymore.
What should I be considering when choosing a plan? I'm genuinely not sure how to approach this. Thanks to everyone!! Hope y'all are staying grounded in this continued loan shitshow <3
Got my 90 day email from Mohela – how do I choose a new plan?
