On ramping in foreign countries

I've noticed certain 'Bitcoiners' seem to promote the sentiment that you can just rock up to a certain country temporarily with your bitcoin and on-ramp easily. This is absolutely not true. I worked in Thailand on a work permit and trying to on ramp with anything short of a work visa is almost impossible in my experience. I'm sure countries are the same now, where KYC is becoming absurd.

There are Bitcoin ATMs and other options, but honestly pointless, the fees are extortionate.

Wondering if I'm missing something?
