On Dec 3, oil futures jumped nearly $3 to their highest since September, before losing some ground. The surge followed news that the US had killed top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, fuelling fears of a conflict in the crude-rich region. Tensions in the Middle East pushed investors towards safe-haven assets, such as gold.
