    on April 25th 1859 a French diplomat broke ground on the Suez Canal a Waterway connecting the Mediterranean to the Red Sea allowing ships to travel between Europe and Asia to avoid sailing around the southern tip of Africa it transformed global trade and transportation by significantly reducing travel time and costs first opened in 1869 after 10 years of construction later expansions occurred the canal has served as a consequential route for international trade and commerce particularly for oil shipments from the Middle East Britain owned most of the Suz Canal Company stock by 1875 and invaded Egypt in 1882 during the Suz crisis of 1956 Egypt nationalized the canal leading to an intervention by British French and Israeli militaries the United States objected to the Allies move threatening consequences for Britain Egypt blocked the canal eventually retaining control the canal faced a 6-day obstruction by a container ship in 2021 in the two years preceding that event about 12% of World Trade almost 20,000 ships and approximately 1 billion tons of cargo went through the canal annually
