Bitcoin didn’t just come out of nowhere. Projects designed to create a digital currency have been around since the 1980s. While most of these projects ultimately failed due to their centralized nature, many of the innovations they contributed would ultimately become part of the Bitcoin protocol. In this section, we examine the difference in resiliency between centralized and decentralized networks, and how Bitcoin can exist without being controlled by a central power.
