Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic visited an industrial complex hosting a gas pipeline project in the village of Gospodjinci, about 100 kilometres (62 miles) north of capital Belgrade, on Friday.

Vucic led the opening ceremony of the Serbian section of the pipeline which will run through Serbia on a 403 kilometres (250 miles) stretch between Hungary and Bulgaria.

“We still have a lot of work ahead of us but this is something that guarantees us a clearer and secure future,” the Serbian president told reporters following the opening.

The so-called ‘interconnector’ gas pipeline is part of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline, a joint project of Russia’s Gazprom and Turkey’s Botas, which aims to provide stable gas supplies to Turkey and across south-eastern Europe.

The pipeline is 930 kilometres (577 miles) long with a capacity of 31.5 billion cubic metres of gas per year.

The ceremony was attended, among others, by the director of the public company Srbijagas, Dusan Bajatovic, the Russian ambassador in Serbia, Aleksandar Bocan Kharchenko, the Serbian Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Tomislav Momirovic as well as delegates from both Russia and Serbia.

SOT, Aleksandar Vucic, President of Serbia (Serbian): “With this gas, which provides energy security to Serbia for the future, we will have the opportunity to attract investors even more. When you have gas in all municipalities and today we have gas in Valjevo, Novi Pazar, in the entire eastern and south sections of Serbia from Toplica to Vranje. All of that will attract all of those who want to open factories and we still have a lot of work ahead of us but this is something that guarantees us a clearer and secure future.”

SOT, Aleksandar Bocan Harchenko, Russian ambassador in Serbia (Serbian): “The most important section of our global projects in our mutual cooperation [agreement] has been completed. This gas station, this interconnector, and new internal gas infrastructure will provide stability to Serbia itself, further development of internal infrastructure of Serbia and full energetic safety, [general] safety, as well as stability in providing energy in Serbia.”
