Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will be finished despite the current difficulties, speaking in Moscow on Tuesday following an online meeting of the Council of the Baltic Sea States foreign ministers.

“I do not think that the project can be stopped. I am convinced that it will be implemented, Germany and other European countries, whose companies are involved in its implementation, are interested in this, ultimately all of Europe is interested in this because it will strengthen European energy security,” the Russian top diplomat said.

Lavrov also mentioned that the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo “called on Germany not to participate in the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project” during his recent phone conversation with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.

“The question is on everyone’s lips; the question is open. We firmly expect that it will be resolved in the legal field. There have already been many significantly politicised actions around this project,” Lavrov added.

US sanctions have delayed the laying of the pipeline, which was initially meant to be completed by the end of 2019.

The minister also talked about Moscow-Washington COVID-19 cooperation, following US President Donald Trump’s offer to send ventilators and other medical aid to Russia.

“It was a sincere offer. We took it as such, and President Putin agreed with it. Now, this proposal is already taking practical shape, it is being implemented. Our American partners are planning two flights that will deliver these devices to medical institutions of the Russian Federation,” said Lavrov.

The US offer comes after Moscow sent medical supplies to America in a similar move in April.
