As construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project continued to face political obstacles as it enters its final stages, residents of Lubmin, where the line will make landfall, expressed a unanimous hope that it will be finished, as they were interviewed on Thursday.

Expressing a common opinion, Lubmin resident Monika Mahla, said: “They have put so much money into it, that it would be money thrown away, the politicians should have thought about everything earlier.”

“Germany will need the gas since the energy that we can get from renewable sources, the wind, is not enough. We could you use it as a transition, for a while gas will still be needed,” stressed another local Ingrid.

Others were more concerned about the costs already sunk into the project with one resident echoing the views of many when she commented that while “building this pipeline is not too good for the Baltic Sea, for the climate protection,” that “to dismantle what’s already been built is probably also not an option now.”

The construction of the pipeline is expected to conclude in summer 2021, despite the threat of US sanctions and calls by groups within Germany and beyond to abandon the project to place pressure on Russia over the alleged poisoning of Alexei Navalny, among other issues.

SOT, Michael Hecht, Lubmin resident (German): “I personally think it makes sense to build it, the infrastructure on land is already done, so why not to finish the pipe? Wouldn’t make sense.”

SOT, Michael Hecht, Lubmin resident (German): “Actually it’s an economic story. It was approved, back then it was a matter of political process, but after that its construction only matters for economics.”

SOT, Monika Mahla, Lubmin resident (German): “They have put so much money into it, that it would be money thrown away, the politicians should have thought about everything earlier. I don’t think it is wrong if it is finished.”

SOT, Ingrid, Lubmin resident (German): “For is in Lubmin it is also good, I’m from Lubmin, while it will bring the town tax money from businesses. And I also think that Germany will need the gas since the energy that we can get from renewable sources, the wind, is not enough. We could you use it as a transition, for a while gas will still be needed.”

SOT, Lubmin resident (German): “I think that after so much was invested it doesn’t make sense to give up so close before the end. It won’t be anything better.”

SOT, Lubmin resident (German): “It’s much cheaper if we get gas from the Soviet Union, and not from America, since it’s more expensive, and I’m also against the sanctions against us that are being discussed.”

SOT, Mrs. Stadtkus, Lubmin resident (German): “There are other energy sources, better for the nature, and building this pipeline is not too good for the Baltic Sea for the climate protection, but as said to dismantle what’s already been built is probably also not an option now.”
