A German government spokesperson stressed that Berlin fundamentally opposes the US sanctions imposed against German and European companies connected to the Nord Stream 2 project, at a press conference in the German capital on Friday.
“We oppose those extraterritorial sanctions against German and European companies and we are already in contact with the American government about this topic and we will for sure hold talks on that with the future American government,” said spokesperson Steffen Seibert.
His comment came following the announcement that the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency had approved the immediate continuation of the construction of the pipeline.
The US State Department warned European companies it believes are involved in the project that they could face sanctions at the start of January, according to Reuters, after the US Congress overrode President Donald Trump’s veto of the 2021 defence spending bill, which contains the provisions against the project, on January 1, 2021.
