Decline in EU renewables increases power prices and fossil fuel use

A decline in renewable energy output across the European Union has led to rising power prices, as well as a greater dependence on coal and natural gas. Wind power, which usually reaches a seasonal peak in Europe during the winter, has dropped by over 20% in some countries.
Reduced wind energy production has driven natural gas prices to a two-year high, while coal prices have risen by about 12% since mid-2024.
An upcoming Arctic blast is expected to further increase fossil fuel use for heating and potentially exacerbate already rising energy costs.

    1. just like communism renewables NEVER have worked and its the same excuse for both…"they didnt do it right, THIS time we will do it right". yeah…freeze in the cold and dark and hope you DICKtator gives you some scraps and not to worry…YOU VOTED FOR IT over and over again

    2. It takes more natural gas to run natural gas turbine generators at 70% fuel consumption at high reacting peaking backup of non culled output wind turbine farms than making all the electricity from efficient running natural gas combined cycle plants. The EU is saving natural gas by culling output of wind turbine farms to a lower more steady output.

A steam cycle turbine generator is slow reacting not allowing it to make up the dips in large amounts of wild AC from wind turbine and solar voltaic generated electricity. Politicians are only interested in the percentage of wild AC from wind turbine and solar voltaic generated electricity the public power grid is supporting not fuel savings.   The UK is now generating the bulk of its electricity with very expensive natural gas. Natural gas in the Europe is now more expensive than crude oil at a crude oil equivalent of $100 a barrel.

The cheapest incremental electricity is from hydropower then nuclear power with new ultra supercritical clean coal power station burning high BTU bituminous coal in the US having an estimated crossover fueling cost with natural gas at $0.80 per million BTUs of natural gas. Natural gas at US wholesale offseason low price was $2.50 per million BTUs June 2024 or over three times the fueling cost of the coal plant. I the winter natural gas peak prices can be several times higher. Natural gas even a breakeven production price is too expensive a fuel for base load electricity.

The UK had wholesale natural gas priced at $10.50 per million BTUs in Oct. 2024. Britain has large quantities of high quality British bituminous coal. British coal mining didn't go through the large amount of automation it did in the 1970s US. By the early 1980s in the US 1/4th the number of coal miners were producing more coal than in the early 1970s. Today US coal mining has become much more automated. Much of coal employment now is for moving and processing coal in the US.
