The Committee on Climate Change’s Further Ambition scenario illustrates that the UK will need a mix of offshore wind, gas power, blue and green hydrogen, and carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) capacity to meet its 2050 net-zero target.

    We have the opportunity to reimagine the North Sea as an integrated and diversified net zero offshore energy system delivering clean energy for Scotland, the UK and Europe. This is a system where wind, tidal, and wave work hand-in-hand with oil and gas, forming the basis for two exciting new industries in hydrogen generation and CCUS, with shared supply chains and a circular economy approach.

    This webinar will highlight the work that the Oil & Gas Technology Centre’s Net Zero Solution Centre is leading to lay the foundations for a net-zero North Sea. Initial analysis has indicated that the combined hydrogen production, CCUS, offshore renewables and oil & gas opportunities for the basin could be substantial, and provide significant employment.

    With more than £130 million co-invested with industry in over 200 technology projects with a GVA potential of £16bn, the OGTC has a strong track record of delivery. The Net Zero Solution Centre was created in September 2019 to accelerate technologies to help decarbonise operations and help the UKCS become the world’s first net-zero hydrocarbon basin. Backed by BP, Shell, Wood, Chrysaor, Aker Solutions, INEOS, CNOOC International, Total, Siemens and Equinor, the new centre is partnering with companies and R&D organisations across the energy sector on a portfolio of technology development projects.
