EU places ‘strongest sanctions yet’ on Russia | BBC News

The European Union placed its “strongest sanctions” yet on Russia, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called “essential and timely”.

The latest EU measures, announced on Friday, included a ban on transactions related to the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline and lowering a cap on the price at which Russian oil can be bought.

They come as European allies hope to ratchet up the pressure on Russia to bring the three-year-long war in Ukraine to an end.

But former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, a close ally of Putin, said his nation’s economy would survive the sanctions and that Moscow will continue striking Ukraine “with increasing force”.

The EU sanctions are the 18th round of such measures since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.

    1. Where are the Russians fleeing Russian choose to go ? Because it would seem the inflation on Russian people leaving the precarious state of economic conditions, are taking their investments out

    2. And can the BBC not employ a news presenter with a real actual face? srsly, if I went into my bank looking like that I'd get jumped.

    3. wow great, by the way, i never once thought that baking was that hard! i tried making some pastries today with my friend and we failed lol

    4. EU actually thinks this is a threat to Russia. This won't stop the war. Russia already has 20,000+ sanctions on them, and still hammering Ukraine. Russia is not isolated, it still has countries it's trading with including UK, US and EU

    5. What difference will it make when countries like Brazil, India, China, South Africa, North Korea, Iran and others don't abide by the world sanction rules?

    6. Sanctions are pointless and they always have been. Putin will still live in opulence and will continue to force his will on everyone. He already got rid of oligarchs that dared suggest he stops the invasion and hasn't cared that MILLIONS of Russians have fled the country.
Unless other countries intervene and make Russia pull out with force, this is just another day for Putin.

    7. Savings alone from subtraction of ultra rich from equation everybody living in today. So funny viewing fecal stain putin fail miserably in escape how utterly useless criminal came into fabulous wealth in first place.
