I’m moving to a 2 bedroom place and I was shocked at how expensive moving stuff was especially bc most people break it down and recycle or straight up trash it. We’re moving tomorrow and I just finished packing the last box and i feel a modicum of glee over the fact that all I bought was 3 rolls of tape for 5$!!

I ended up finding someone locally on Facebook marketplace who had just moved and wanted to get rid of a bunch of moving boxes for free included one of the closet boxes with hanging capabilities and a few boxes full of packing paper. And then I supplemented with boxes from the liquor store and some paper ream boxes from the office for smaller/heavier things like the 200+ books I own 💀

Not to mention I got a round dining table and 3 chairs for free, a microwave for free, a bookcase and 2 lawn chairs. But that was more due to family friends offloading things from storage spaces onto me. I’ve refinished the table and not paying for something makes it so much sweeter. The only thing I regret is accepting an area rug from my aunt because I ended up shampooing it 5 time and pressure washing it before it was clean 😭 I spent almost 10 hours on it over three afternoons so next time I’ll bite the bullet and pay for a reasonably priced rug from ocean state job lot or the like 💀

Moving and managed to not have to buy a single box!

    1. You can ask grocery stores and especially liquor stores for boxes.

They will be happy to give them away, because that’s less boxes they have to get rid of.

And liquor stores tends to have thick, sturdy boxes, because they were meant to carry a bunch of heavy bottles.

    2. i’ve always worked in a restaurant so ive never even considered purchasing boxes. glad it worked out for you OP! i hope you can pass them along to someone else who is moving!

    3. Watching area rug cleaning vids on TikTok are oddly satisfying. Maybe next time just pay to have someone else clean it?

    4. We thought we were moving 2 years ago and two friends who had just moved dropped off lots of moving boxes. I mean LOTS. I must have 50. A friend is moving and I kitted her out. I also volunteer at a food pantry so people know I am good for whatever boxes they might need…whatever size and sturdiness. I am not paying for boxes.
