I’m planning a short trip with my friends this fall for about 4 to 5 days, domestic. I’m stuck between frugal vs cheap. When I say I want to do the trip frugally, my friends instantly assume that means no eating out. no fun activities. no buying souvenirs. just sitting in an Airbnb eating peanut butter sandwiches.

I know frugal isn’t about killing the fun but cutting the waste and actually enjoying what matters.

For frequent frugal travellers how do you keep costs down without it feeling like you’re just being cheap? Also, any hacks for food, activities, budgeting or experiences where you get the most value without overspending?

Why do most people think frugal means cheap?

A lot of people who consider themselves to be frugal are just being cheap. There was a time when this sub had some ridiculous “money saving tips”. I cant remember specific ones, but think along the lines of “disconnect your plumbing so your shower water drains into a bucket, then use the soapy water you collected to wash your dishes” type shit.

Being frugal is just stretching your dollar. Being cheap is greatly inconveniencing yourself or others for a paltry gain.

it’s an airbnb so you can cook there . you don’t have to eat out all the time, you can get easy or ready meals .

also you can have nice breakfast at home.

walking is the best way to explore new cities

I usually go to asian or ethnic restaurants: usually it’s good , you can find cheap ones and over all a good experience

you can go out to dance in some bars or clubs free entrance just get one drink

take your water or tea in an insulated bottle with you

art galleries are fun to visit and free

go to the tourist bureau or town hall for information and great deals

    3. To me, being cheap is buying the cheapest option without looking at quality.

Part of traveling can be the food, so I’ll eat out for the experience. But if I’m going on a vacation to a place that’s known for the experience, and not the food, then I’ll probably prepare more of my own food and pack snacks for outings.
