Hey!

I'm thinking of removing free tier from my SaaS and switching to a free trial model instead. My hesitation is that there are other products in my space offering permanent free tiers.

Has anyone here gone through this transition? What was the impact on signups, conversions, or churn? Would love to hear your experiences.

Ditching free tier – a good idea?

I have always had the free trial method. Definitely recommend. People who use free consistently will never convert. People who want to try it out will use the trial anyway.

This is a classic, tough decision. We made this switch from freemium to a 14-day free trial.

Here’s the honest reality of what will likely happen:

Sign-ups: They will drop. Probably by a lot. You have to be mentally prepared for this.

Lead Quality: Will go through the roof. The users who sign up for a trial are far more serious and qualified.

Conversion Rate: Your trial-to-paid conversion rate should increase dramatically.

Support Load: Your support tickets and server costs will decrease because you’re no longer servicing an army of free users who were never going to pay.

Don’t worry about competitors offering a free plan. You’re not trying to attract their free users. You’re filtering for high-intent customers who value your product enough to pay for it after a trial. It’s a healthier business model in the long run.
